India is a land of tradition and diverse cultures and every festival is celebrated with great pomp and glory. Today is Krishna Jayanthi also called as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami which is the auspicious day when Lord Krishna graced this earth with his presence. It is one of the most celebrated festivals by the Hindus not only in India but world over.
It is a day when they show their love and celebrate Krishna’s birth with a lot of joy and mirth. Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavat Gita , “If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.” But the devotees out of their love, affection and gratitude to the Primeval Lord prepare delicious varieties of Krishna’s favourite food and offer it as Prasad.
Lord Krishna’s childhood favourites include butter, milk, curd and rice flakes with jaggery. So an offering made with one of the above ingredients will make for a good prasad. A lot of savories and sweets are also made by his devotees in a festive and reverential mood and offered to the benevolent Lord Krishna.
I was thinking that a sweet preparation made out of curds would be an ideal dish to offer to the Lord. And what popped to my mind was the “Shrikhand.” The Shrikhand is a popular North Indian dessert made out of yogurt and garnished with nuts. It is almost a regular in most of the households. This Indian equivalent of ice cream can be eaten as is or with Puris and rotis.
It is prepared with hung curds, silky strands of saffron, some sugar and the aromatic elaichi. It is garnished with roasted nuts and looks pretty in a pastel yellow. It’s creamy, indulgent and delicious. This is one offering which will delight the Lord and is a fit sweet treat to celebrate his birth day.
Wishing all of you a very Happy Krishna Jayanthi. May Lord Krishna abundantly bless you with lots of joy, happiness and prosperity! Hare Krishna !!
